It was originally, a 12th-century headquarters of the religious and military orders of the Temple and Christ (when the Templar order was dissolved in the 14th century), that later supported maritime discoveries of Portugal in the 15th century.
The convent and castle complex are a historic and cultural monument and it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983.
